Examples of some of Thunderbird Creek's many sustainable initiatives include: a comprehensive stormwater management system to safeguard fish and wildlife habitats by maintaining Thunderbird and Meighan Creeks' natural drainage pattern and water quality; specially designed streetlights that minimize light pollution and its negative impact on plants and nocturnal species; an award-winning smoke-free burn pit that incinerates wood waste without compromising local air quality or relying heavily on local landfills; the dedication of over 20 percent of the Thunderbird Creek community to protected green space; and an intricate series of biking and hiking trails to reduce car dependence.
RAIN, RAIN, FLOW AWAYRain gardens play a critical role in preserving the water quality and natural drainage patterns of nearby Thunderbird and Meighan Creeks. A 2% road slope directs rainwater to roadside rain gardens where it is bio-filtered and dispersed back into the ground. Roads are also slightly narrower than most and follow the natural contours of the land. |
STAR LIGHT, STAR BRIGHTLight pollution not only makes it hard to find your favourite constellation, it also has a detrimental effect on nocturnal species, as well as plants and trees that need darkness to regenerate at night. To minimize artificial glow, Thunderbird Creek has specially designed streetlights that focus light only where it's needed, reducing spill over into the nighttime sky and windows of nearby homes. |
BURN, BABY, BURNTo reduce the community's environmental footprint and landfill dependence, we've developed an award-winning, smoke-free burn pit that incinerates wood waste without compromising local air quality. The first of its kind in the Lower Mainland, this on-site 20 by 40-foot pit is lined with steel from reclaimed railcars and topped with concrete blocks. An air-burning machine directs a continuous stream of high-velocity air into the pit to keep temperatures high for a cleaner, more complete burn with little ash and no smoke. |
ENJOY THE JOURNEYWe're doing everything we can to preserve Thunderbird Creek's health and beauty for generations to come. Upon completion, over 20 percent of the community will be protected green space with a network of biking and hiking trails. This will enable local residents to reduce their car dependence and enjoy their journeys as much as their destinations. |
